This article provides an overview of the evolutionρf colorful ceramic decorations in China from the Pre--Qin period to the Southern and Northern Dynasties,ranging from the prehistoric painted pottery,glazed ceramics of the Han Dynasty,to the ceramic coloration techniques of the Three Kingdoms,the Western and Eastern Jin Dynasties,and the Northern and Southern Dynasties.The article reveals a pattern in which ceramic colorful decorations transitioned from indigenous innovation to a parallel path of the combination of local innovation and fusion innovation.Through examples of unearthed ceramics with colorful decorations,it gives a vivid description of the continuous development,cross-cultural exchanges,and innovations that characterized the evolution of colorful ceramic decorations in China.It reflects how the colorful ceramic decorations from the Pre-Qin to the Southern and Northern Dynasties continuously evolved through interactions with foreign influences,enlightening and contributing to the prosperity of ceramics during the Sui and Tang Dynasties and the millennium-long prominence of Jingdezhen as the porcelain capital.
