Order in Chaos:Armed Forces and Resistance in the South of Shanxi in the Early Days of the Occupation—From the Perspective of Hao Xingjiu’s Diary

日本侵占晋南后,引起了乡村社会既有秩序的变动。在日军统治的缝隙之中,国民党军队及晋南地方武装坚持抵抗,乡村中出现了多支武装共存的局面。陷于各方武装之间的本地民众,苦于日军的残暴,一方面希望抵抗武装打击日军,另一方面忧惧日军施以报复。各方武装有着合作抗敌的举动,但相互的生存竞争削弱了对敌抵抗的效能。在战争、暴行与混乱的交织下,沦陷地区民众生活倍加苦难。区别于敌后的国民党武装,八路军在民众中留下了抗战爱民的良好印象。国共敌后武装在民众心目中的迥异形象,正是两党各自抗战路线的真实写照。

After the Japanese occupation of southern Shanxi,the existing order of rural society was changed.In the gap between Japanese rule,the Kuomintang army and the local armed forces in southern Shanxi persisted in resistance,and several armed forces coexisted in the countryside.The local people in between the armed parties,suffering from the brutality of the Japanese army,on the one hand,hoping resisting armed forces attack on the Japanese,on the other hand,fearing the Japanese army to retaliate.The armed forces of all sides cooperated to fight the enemy,but the mutual survival competition weakened the effectiveness of the resistance against the Japanese.War,atrocities and chaos have compounded the suffering of the people in the occupied areas.Different from the Kuomintang forces in the occupied areas,the Eighth Route Army left a good impression among the people.The different images of the armed forces in the minds of the public are the true portrayal of the two parties’respective anti-Japanese policies.
