The Remains of the Day is the representative work of Kazuo Ishiguro,a contemporary British writer of Japanese descent. The novel,in diary form, tells the story of Stevens, the butler,on a six-day trip to the West of England. In his novel,Kazuo Ishiguro reproduces a simple, implicit and elegant narrative style, explores the personal fate behind historical events from the main perspective of the protagonist Stevens, and deeply interrogated his professional spirit and moral value pursuit through recalling narrative methods, writing about the individual trauma caused by personal experiences and the collective trauma in the reality of the decline of the British Empire.Kazuo Ishiguro makes a dialogue between history and future, memory and reality, mansion and countryside, etc. He uses contradictory narrative strategies and exquisite text expression to provide a unique literary perspective for people to examine historical trauma and find self-value.
