As a core concept in trans-Himalayan Area Studies,“跨喜马拉雅”was translated from“Trans-Himalaya”,which originally means“beyond the Himalayas”.The Swedish explorer Sven Hedin first used it to name a mountain system located in the north of the Himalayas,i.e.Kailas Range in China. There are three main Chinese translations of“Trans-Himalaya”,namely,“外喜马拉雅”,“跨喜马拉雅”and“环喜马拉雅”.“外喜马拉雅”is a translation in line with Sven Hedin's original meaning, but it is less commonly used because it does not conform to the usage in China.“跨喜马拉雅”was first translated and used in Sven Hedin's original sense and later became a regionalist concept.“环喜马拉雅”on the other hand, was far from its original meaning and first used as a concept of“world region”for Area Studies, and then eventually transformed into a regionalist concept as well.A review of the origins of the concept of“Trans-Himalaya”and a discernment of the meaning and usage of its Chinese translation could provide a conceptual basis for trans-Himalayan Area Studies.
