Tetsuzo Tanikawa's View of the“East/West”and His Theory of“The Root East”

谷川彻三在半个多世纪不同的时代条件下持续不断地思考“东洋/西洋”问题,发表了一系列具有思想史价值的见解,在日本东洋学思想史上卓成一家。他的《东洋与西洋》等论著,站在历史文化形态学的立场上,对当时日本的“指导亚洲”论做了质疑与批判。而且,他还从“殖民/被殖民”角度来理解现代世界中“东洋/西洋”的对立与并立。他晚年又提出了“根源性的东洋”这一概念,在“无/有”“自然/自由”的观念比较中,论述古代世界中的“东洋/西洋”的文化形态,并且指出东洋的“无”不是实体或本体,而是“作用性”“功能性”的,从而抓住了东方传统文化的本质特征,这些见解至今仍不失启发性。

During more than half a century of different historical conditions,Tetsuzo Tanikawa continuously pondered the“East/West”issue and published a series of insights with historical value,making him a prominent figure in the history of ideas about Japanese oriental studies.His works such as“The East and the West”questioned and criticized Japan's“Guiding Asia”theory at that time from the perspective of historical and cultural morphology.Moreover,he also understood the opposition and juxtaposition of the“East/West”in the modern world from the perspective of“Colonization/Colonization”.In his later years,he also proposed the concept of“The Root East”.In the comparison of the concepts of“Nothing/Existence”and“Nature/Freedom”,he discussed the cultural form of the“East/West”in the ancient world,and pointed out that“Nothing”in the oriental studies is not an entity or entity,but rather functional and functional,thus grasping the essential characteristics of Eastern traditional culture.These insights are still inspiring nowadays.
