Xia Nai and Chang Shuhong were distinguished scholars in the fields of Chinese archaeology and Dunhuang studies. They first met during the Northwest Scientific Expedition to Dunhuang in 1944 and maintained a profound friendship for over four decades.Through deeper academic exchanges during the expedition to northwest China,Xia and Chang found common ground on various issues, including the numbering of Mogao Caves, cultural relic conservation, and sharing of archaeological materials. However, they also held distinct viewpoints on certain matters.During a period of turbulence in Chang Shuhong's career and interpersonal relations,Xia Nai provided both direct and indirect encouragement and assistance. After 1949,their interactions intensified due to work-related connections. The interactions between Xia Nai and Chang Shuhong were consistently mediated through Dunhuang studies and left a profound impact on the history of scholarship.
