This paper analyzes the relevance between the text and history in the film"Green Book"from the perspective of New Historicism, namely"the historicity of the text"and"the textuality of history."Set in 1960s America,"Green Book"reflects the social and historical context of that era.The protagonist,Don Shirley, traveled south with the aim to"subvert"white authority and break free from the marginalized identity of his fellow African Americans. However, the concept of"restraint"prevents Shirley's"subversion"from being complete, thus failing to achieve true equality between black and white people. The film unveils expectations for improving racial discrimination, calls for escaping the marginalization of African Americans, and seeks to enhance their rights and discourse.
