This article briefly introduces the origin and the development of the World Congress on Railway Research and comprehensively expounds the focal points of implementation of the technological innovations of railways over the world such as laying emphasis on improving the safety of railways,reducing the energy consumption of railways,promoting the development in harmony with the environment and improving the convenience of railways.It summarizes the general trends of the world railway development which consist of the safe,ecological and sustainable development of system,the application of all kinds of advanced new technologies to improve the safety level of railways,the delivery of better passenger and freight services to users and the importance attached to the application of big data processing technology in the railway technological research and management.It clarifies the challenge of railway development through technological innovation by 2050,points out the reference role of the Chinese development and the technical problems concerned by Chinese railways and give some suggestions.
