From December 2006 to January 2007,in coordination with the construction of the square of Dawang Temple,Yangzhou Municipal Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology conducted a salvage excavation at the would-be construction site. Results of the excavation show that this place was near the north bank of the ancient canal, and that the discovered canal revetments date back to two phases in Tang Dynasty and one in Song Dynasty. The canal revetment of the second phase in Tang Dynasty was converted into a residential area by the locals after its abandonment. This area was dredged after Song Dynasty.Broken porcelain ware unearthed here, although fewer than those found along the banks of Guanhe River inside the city, include porcelains from famous kilns of both north and south China, reflecting the prosperity of porcelain trade in Yangzhou, which was an important international trade port in Tang Dynasty.
