Annie Proulx tended to examine contemporary social issues from the ecological perspective in her works. In her novel named That Old Ace in the Hole, the writer took the protagonist Bob's experiences and ideological changes when Bob located big spreads of land in the panhandles that can be converted to hog farms in the western United States as clues, showing the unique ecological environment and living conditions of the western United States. The writer discussed the ecological crisis and ecological responsibility in the western panhandles from the aspects of history, culture and industrialization, regarded the self-realization of people as the ultimate goal of the man getting along with nature, and showed the intrinsic value of the natural ecology in panhandles.Proulx strongly opposed the destruction of the natural ecological environment by industrial civilization and capital expansion, and deeply thought about the way to solve the ecological predicament so as to realize the ecological ideal of harmonious coexistence between man and nature in panhandles.
