Anarchism was one of the many thoughts during the May Fourth period. Its popularity was closely related to the“underground press”of its related publications.By using various means, the anarchists evaded censorship. They circulated books, newspapers and pamphlets to radical youth, which were read by many young people like Ba Jin.To some extent, the numerous anarchist societies during the May Fourth period were the result of private or public reading of these samizdat publications. The youth were stimulated by publications and yearned for communism, eager for struggle, revolution and self-sacrifice.Strong emotional enlightenment drives them toward revolution, but actions driven solely by emotion are doomed to be blind. With the rise of the National Revolution, the appeal of anarchist publications gradually faded after the mid-1920s.The discussion of the“history of underground press”of anarchist publications helps to enrich our understanding of the relationship between the circulation of books and newspapers and the acceptance of young people’s thoughts during the May Fourth period.
