A Textual Research on Chinese Manuscript M1·1460 Unearthed from Khara-Khoto

中国藏黑水城文献M1·1460版画图文并茂:上部是“金刚索菩萨尊像”,中间及左下方为“隋文策持诵《金刚经》还生记”,右下角为“隋文策持诵《金刚经》还生记”感应故事画。此画上部当为“阎王查审文策善恶图”,下部则是“二僧导引文策返生图”。中间“隋文策奉持《金刚经》还生记”的文本风格接近于晚唐卢求《金刚经报应记》。整体来看,M1·1460与傅增湘藏《宋刊〈金刚经〉》中的“八金刚四菩萨”系列尊像插图高度同源。这种套中套、字包文的版式插图深刻影响了后世图绘《〈金刚经〉灵验记》的风格。

Document M1·1460,a manuscript from the Khara-Khoto documents collected in China,is an illustrated block print with an image entitled"Portrait of Vajrayana Bodhisattva"on the upper edge,a text describing the"Record of Wence Reciting the Diamond Sutra and Being Reborn in the Sui Dynasty"in the middle and lower left,and a painting of a retribution story in the lower right corner.The story painting consists of three parts:an image depicting"the King of Hell examining Wence s sins and virtues,"an image of"two monks leading Wence back to life"in the lower part,and the text of the"Record of Wence Reciting the Diamond Sutra and Being Reborn in the Sui Dynasty"between the two.The textual style of the writing exhibits clear similarities with that of the Records of Retribution in the Diamond Sutra written by Lu Qiu in the Later Tang dynasty.Generally speaking,M1·1460 shares many similarities with serialized illustrations of the"Eight Guardians and Four Bodhisattvas"in the Diamond Sutra Published in the Song Dynasty collected by early 2Oth century collector and academic Fu Zengxiang.This style of illustration in which texts and pictures are nested with each other deeply influenced later illustrated versions of the Miraculous StoriesoftheDiamond Sutra.
