The novel Oberman, written by Senancour in the early French Romanticist period, occupies an important position in modern French literary history. For a long time, however, the attention it has drawn does not stand in proportion to its proper worth. The novel belongs to the genre of epistolary novel, having an appearance of being lengthy, not well framed and anti-narrative.But a closer examination may make the reader aware that its external looseness actually reflects a key notion of“Oisiveté”held by some Romantic writers from the middle and late 18th century to the 19th century. It seems that the state of idleness may lend itself to intense contemplation. This paradoxical tension is what this article attempts to address.
