The Revision of the Sino-French Commercial Treaty and Its Impact--Centering on the Shanghai Republican Daily

1928年6月,南京国民政府力求摆脱不平等条约的束缚,发起了同西方国家改订新约的运动。《中法商约》作为中国与西方国家签订的不平等商约的代表之一,它的签订是中国百年屈辱史的一个缩影。南京国民政府为了给改订新约运动奠定政治基调与赢得社会舆论支持,积极与法国修订《中法商约》。上海《民国日报》作为当时进步色彩比较鲜明的国民党机关报,以中国民众的立场对《中法商约》的谈判过程进行了详尽的报道。在其报道的影响下,在政治层面上增强了政府与中国民众对改订新约运动的信心;在地区层面上使得云南成功收回滇越利权,壮大了云南地区的经济实力;在对外层面上为在越华人争取到了合法权利,并为南京国民政府对越外交提供了重要的经验。

In June 1928,the Nanjing National Government,striving to free itself from the shackles of unequal treaties,launched a campaign to reformulate new treaties with Western countries.The birth of the Sino-French Commercial Treaty,one of the most unequal commercial treaties between China and the West,epitomized China’s century-long history of humiliation.In order to set the political tone and win the support of public opinion for the Treaty Re-negotiation Movement,the national government actively revised the Sino-French Commercial Treaty with France at the early stage.The Shanghai Republican Daily,as a progressive organ at that time,reported the negotiation process of the Sino-French Commercial Treaty in detail from the standpoint of the Chinese people.Under its coverage,it strengthened the confidence of the government and the Chinese people in the movement to revise the new treaty on the political level;on the regional level,it enabled Yunnan to successfully recover the rights of Yunnan-Vietnam and strengthened the economic power of the region;on the external level,it fought for the legal rights of the Chinese in Vietnam,and provided important experience for the Nanjing National Government’s diplomacy with Vietnam.
