Studying the ideals and pursuits of a generation of outstanding intellectuals from the period of the Republic of China to the early history of New China,we can find that Zhu Kezhen’s diary is an extremely valuable material,from which we can see the extremely rich spiritual world of its owner.The diary vividly reproduces Zhu Kezhen’s feeling of worrying about the country and caring about people’s livelihood under heaven,the image of an outstanding scholar of the times who embraces Chinese and Western cultures,a great scientist’s unswerving pursuit of truth,and his philosophical and relaxed attitude towards life.It is also commendable that the private records spanning nearly 40 years truly reflect the trend of the times and retain the“original ecology”of historical details.Compared with the diaries of celebrities such as Hu Shi,Gu Jiegang,and Wu Mi,Zhu Kezhen’s diaries are superior to Hu Shi’s diaries in systematic context and coherence and are superior to Gu Jiegang’s and Wu Mi’s diaries in reflecting the changes of the times and life pattern,which has special historical and social values.
