In the exchanges among the countries in the pre-modern East Asian maritime region, monks played an important role.Their cross-border activities facilitated communication and circulation of culture, information, and artifacts at multiple levels within the East Asian maritime world. In the early 15th century,Japanese envoys Kuei Ch'ou,Fan Ling and their followers came to Korea for“the Dazangjing”(Buddhist scriptures, the Great Treasury Sutras).Their negotiations on this matter reflected one aspect of the two countries'religious exchanges and also demonstrated the multi-dimensional exchanges in intelligence, personnel movement, and cultural interaction between the two countries.Examining the activities of Kuei Ch'ou and Fan Ling's mission not only helps to reconstruct the diverse details and historical scenes of Japan-Korea diplomacy at the time, but also provides a clue to examine the diplomatic attitudes of the early Joseon dynasty towards Japan.
