Land art emerged in the United States in the late 1960s.Its direct sources are the earlier movements of Happening,Fluxus, and Minimalism, all of which to some extent reflect Zen aesthetic meaning.Zen,which serves as the basis of affinity between these movements,is closely related to the background of Zens transmission to the West and the“Zen boom”in the 20th century. The main contents of Zens view of nature, emptiness, enlightenment, and the principle of nonduality are creatively reflected in land art.Land art has obvious Zen aesthetic expressions in its approach to nature, its view of time and space, and its emphasis on experientiality.
