From the Pastness of Art to the Humanistic Ethics on Love-An Interview with Professor Paul Kottman

Professor Paul Kottman's profound works on Hegelian aesthetics and Shakespeare literature have set great examples for multidisciplinary research in contemporary humanities.This interview begins with Kottman's explanation of Hegel's aesthetic notion“pastness of art”.He identifies the reason why contemporary ac-ademia misinterprets“pastness”as“end”,and then discusses several relative aesthetic topics such as how art can be viewed historically,how its meaning and value can be perceived by contemporary people and how to reflect on art after its pastness.Kottman also takes Shakespeares work as an example to clarify the re-sistance relationship between art and philosophy in different historical contexts,so as to demonstrate the great advantage of multidisciplinary methodology.Finally,facing the contemporary world where art has been disenfranchised,Kottman ex-tends the domain from aesthetics to humanistic ethics on“love as human free-dom”,attempting to reveal the constant demand for“mutuality”between people and the world.He also explores how the universal love which is across cultural tra-ditions can manifest the universality of humanistic ethical research.
