摘要
现代美国戏剧在20世纪初开始走向成熟,与高等院校戏剧人才培养机制的建立有着密切的关系。哈佛大学从系统开设欧洲戏剧通史,到培养学生的戏剧创作技巧及实践,为戏剧学科的建设奠定了基础。在贝克教授的领导下,他所工作过的哈佛大学和耶鲁大学成为美国戏剧教育的重镇,培养了一大批从事戏剧创作、戏剧批评、舞台设计等方面的人才,对现代美国戏剧走向成熟发挥了重要作用。
The establishment of the program for training playwrights at the turn of the century at Harvard University contributed significantly to the birth of modern American drama.The courses and lectures on theatre history and the technique of dramatic composition offered by Professor George Pierce Baker laid the foundation for the new academic discipline.Harvard University and Yale University,where Professor Baker worked,have become the centers of American theatre education.Many playwrights,scenic designers,and lighting specialists who studied with Professor Baker were essential persons in the development of modern American drama.
