In Norwegian Wood,the characters are confused and searching for their own identities,reflecting a distinct reflection on modernity.Watanabe wants to save the negative and pessimistic Naoko,but he can’t give up the cheerful and unrestrained Kobayashi Midoriko.In the double-line parallel narrative structure,the novel on the one hand presents Watanabe’s spiritual world in detail,and on the other hand,it also contrasts Naoko and Midoriko,who have different personalities.Haruki Murakami focuses on the different expressions of the characters in the novel in terms of individuality and commonality,as well as compromise and confrontation,and presents the rich connotation of Japanese modernity in the 60s of the 20th century.In addition,the gap between ideal and reality in fiction is examined through the art of irony,which provides new inspiration for the reflection of“modernity”.
