In recent years, five large statues have been retrieved from the riverbed of Dujiangyan. One of them holds a shovel in his hands and has thus been described as the"stone likeness of a worker".Depictions of a man holding a shovel are for the most part encountered in Han figurines in Sichuan, and in stone reliefs in Southern Shandong and Northern Jiangsu.Comparing such portrayals, the statue here discussed comes closer to the mythical Han hero Yu the Great, who always has a shovel and a bamboo hat.Since the present statue seems to have been used for the taming floods,it ought to be described as a portrayal of Yu the Great.
