“薛婆!薛婆婆!”有人在临安兰陵坊的一间果子铺前使劲儿敲着门,声音盖过了头陀的报晓声:“天色阴晦——”兰陵坊在御街东边,因为坊前有一座水巷桥而被称为“水巷桥巷”,简称“水巷”。此处商业繁荣,有许多著名的商铺,如徐家绒线铺、俞家冠子铺、彭家温州漆器铺等。这间果子铺挨着彭家温州漆器铺。大门忽然开了,走出来一个六七十岁的老婆婆,正是薛婆。敲门的年轻男子叽里咕噜说了一通,再三交代好了“相亲”的事才离开。
