Objective Accurately recognizing pedestrian intentions is very important to ensure the safety of drivers and pedestrians, but drivers are likely to withstand varying degrees of cognitive load when operating the vehicles. The study aim to investigate the effect of cognitive load on the drivers recognition of pedestrian intentions. Methods The study manipulated the cognitive load by the auditory N-back task, asking participants(N=90)to recognize pedestrian intentions in simulated driving scenarios.ResultsThe drivers'discrimination of pedestrian intentions under the high load of two-back dual task is significantly lower than that of one-back dual task and single task, additionally there exists no difference between the latter two. Conclusion The increasing cognitive load weaken the discrimination of identifying pedestrian intentions, suggesting that the involvement of cognitive resource is needed while recognizing pedestrian intentions.Accordingly, for the sake of improving driving safety, the drivers should keep their cognitive load as low as possible during driving.
