Margaret Drabble's first fiction A Summer Bird-cage is a reflection of the British society in the 1960s,and the characters focally embody the common mentality of British nationals at that time."Bird-cage"is a symbolic expression of the common mentality of British nationals against the background of social change after the Second World War.It bears multiple symbolic meanings as following:the contradictory attitude towards keeping tradition or abandoning it,"new female"pursuing independence and adhering to the Victorian values,and the con⁃tradictory perception of"freedom".The great tension among these contradictions could imply British nationals'spiritual confusion as well as expectation for the reconstruction of social order in the 1960s.In addition,it is a per⁃formance of female growth anxieties.
