In Liu Qing’s novels written before the founding of the PRC, the Anti-Japanese War and the War of Liberation are historical elements that cannot be ignored. The transformation of the two wars suggests that the writer further understands the revolutionary and peoplehood of the wars in a new historical context. By interpreting the writing of war in Liu Qing’s short story collection Landmines and long novel Brass and Iron Walls , it is possible to see the author’s attempt to respond to how peasants are reabsorbed into political life and how they are cultivated as revolutionary subjects after the disintegration of the traditional rural social structure. In addition to rural subjects, Liu Qing’s writing about war also reflects his in-depth observation of the Chinese revolution, which is important for a comprehensive understanding of Liu Qing and his works.
