Hu Sanxing of the late Song Dynasty once mentioned that the Zizhi Tong jian published by the Fei family in Guangdu County, Sichuan, was referred to as the “dragon claw”edition of the book at that time. Unfortunately, the original “dragon claw” edition has been lost, and many bibliophiles and scholars of later ages mistakenly regarded Zizhi Tongjian published in Ezhou at the end of the Southern Song Dynasty as the “dragon claw” edition. There have also been various speculations regarding the origin of the name of this edition. This paper, after examining historical records, argues that the Ezhou edition is not the “dragon-claw”edition but a later reproduction of it. Furthermore, by examining the meaning and usage of the term “Longzhua”(literally “dragon claw”) in ancient times, and in association with the specific context of book production, it is inferred here that the name “dragon claw” likely derives from the sharp and distinctive calligraphy font used in the printing of this edition.
