Contemporary British writer Kamila Shamsie rewrites Antigone in her novel Home Fire, which gives new meaning to how marginal groups should challenge absolute authority.Recontextualizing the conflict between Antigone and Creon in Britain,Shamsie depicts the plight of British Muslims and their citizenship crisis in the era of“global counter-terrorism.”Foregrounding the minor characters in Antigone,Shamsie explores the deep reasons why Western Muslim families fall into the terrorist circle, and reveals the extremist essence of Western counter-terrorism strategies.Replacing the contradiction of“burying or not”in the original play with the argument of“returning home or not,”Shamsie exposes citizenship as a privilege and criticizes legal discrimination in Britain.Shamsie’s ingenious appropriation of Antigone demonstrates the modern connotation of classical Greek tragedies and contemporary writers’responsibility.
