The initiation of conduit metaphor theory:Review and prospect

语言学家Michael Reddy肇始的导管隐喻是概念隐喻理论学术大厦的奠基石,但该理论在认知学界并未受到应有关注和重视,对其介绍和论述甚少。甚至有个别学者本末倒置地误以为导管隐喻是在后续的概念隐喻理论基础上发展而来。鉴于此,本文详细介绍了导管隐喻概念形成的成因始末,论述了导管隐喻对概念隐喻理论发轫的价值及其在语言意识形态和写作教学层面的应用。笔者还对导管隐喻所遭受的质疑予以剖析,最后阐释了导管隐喻的转喻理据性,为该理论的未来发展指明了道路和方向。

Conduit Metaphor Theory proposed by linguist Michael Reddy laid a solid foundation for the development of Conceptual Metaphor Theory,but it has not received due attention in the cognitive circle,and has rarely been mentioned in terms of introduction and discussion.Some young scholars even mistakenly believe that Conduit Metaphor Theory is the subse⁃quent development of Conceptual Metaphor Theory.In view of this,this paper presents an elaboration of the cause and formation of Conduit Metaphor Theory,and discusses the en⁃lightenment of the theory onto Conceptual Metaphor Theory and its typical application in language ideology and writing pedagogy.This paper also analyzes the doubts concerning Conduit Metaphor Theory,and finally explains the metonymic motivation of conduit meta⁃phors,with an expectation to shedding light on the theory’s prospective further in⁃depth re⁃search.
