Edgar Allan Poe is famous for short stories, whose Gothic novels not only contain various horrible and mysterious Gothic elements, such as supernatural, death, and misfortune but also reflect the alienated psychological state of people in real society. The Black Cat is one of his classic works. This article seeks to interpret the elements of the uncanny and explain the em⁃bodiment and root with the guidance of Freud’s theory of the uncanny and psychoanalysis. The reappearance in The Black Cat is essentially a repressive reproduction, while madness is an ex⁃ternal manifestation of inner evil which roots from personality imbalance. The imbalance of per⁃sonality, oppressive social environment and the harm of alcoholism drives“I”to suffer the tragic end.
