After the establishment of Penang, Malaysia, the local Teochew community grew, and Teochew opera troupes were introduced there in the early 20th century. A Penang-based Teochew opera family with a history successively spanning a century and five generations founded the Lau Sai Yong Fong Teochew Opera Troupe, Kim Giak Low Choon Teochew Puppet Troupe, and Kim Giak Low Choon Teochew Opera Troupe, showcasing the vitality of Teochew opera development in Penang and the cultural inheritance of the local Teochew community. Originally a foreign theatrical genre, Teochew opera troupes, during their years of development in Malaysia, had to consider factors such as performance venues, repertoire, operating costs, mobility, and the nature of their performances. They made various adjustments, innovations, and adaptations to adapt to the changing times and environments, imbued new elements into local Teochew opera, and continued to nourish the local Teochew community.
