The Temptation of Landscape and the Crazy Atmosphere in Ng Kim Chew’s Fiction

黄锦树曾获第一届世界华文文学奖、台湾时报文学奖、联合报文学奖等多个奖项,是马华文学的重量级作家。他的作品有“先锋”的特质,这种特质体现在“文化地景”的选择和氛围的营造上:以“对抗性气氛”打造小镇空间、用“黑暗”和“雨”作为气氛底色围困胶林,使种族裂痕和身份迷乱的心理创伤得以充分呈露;将梦境嵌入楼阁,使“文化地景”的环境以似真似幻的样态呈现,由此延长读者感知美妙气氛的过程;利用“雾”之弥散夺走荒岛的同质性,使迷雾氛围成为黄锦树建构异质“地景”的“共谋”。可以说黄锦树小说的先锋特质很大一部分受惠于其强大的“文化地景”构建和气氛制造能力,同时,从地景气氛的视角检视文本,亦可照见黄锦树心灵影像的丰富样态。

Ng Kim Chew is a heavy-weight writer in Chinese Malaysian literature as he has won many awards,including the First World Chinese Literature Award,Taiwan Times Literary Award and United Daily News Literary Award.His work is avant-garde and that quality is reflected in the choice of cultural landscape and the creation of atmosphere:shaping up town space with resistant atmosphere,and surrounding the gum woods with darkness and rain as the background colour,so that racial rifts and psychological trauma of confused identities can be fully revealed;it is reflected in the fact that dream is embedded in the castle,so that the environment of the cultural landscape appears to be half authentic and half illusory,thus elongating the reader’s consciousness of the beautiful atmospheric process;and that fog is used to disperse the homogeneity of the waste island so that the atmosphere of fog becomes complicit in Ng’s construction of the heterogeneous landscape.It can be said that much of this avant-garde quality of Ng’s fiction is benefited from his strong construction of the cultural landscape and power of creating the atmosphere.Meanwhile,if the text is examined from the angle of landscape atmosphere,one can also see the rich pattern of Ng’s soulful imagery.
