Objective:The aim of this study was to quantitatively assess the knee cartilage of college wushu athletes by T2-mapping functional magnetic resonance imaging technique, and to investigate the effect of traditional wushu routine training on the knee cartilage of college wushu athletes. Methods:Nine college wushu athletes between the ages of 18 and 25 were selected as the experimental group, while 18 normal healthy college students were selected as the control group. Under the same conditions, T2-mapping magnetic resonance examination of the right knee joint was performed for both groups, and the knee cartilage was divided into five regions of interest: medial femoral condyle, medial tibial condyle, patellar cartilage, lateral femoral condyle and lateral tibial condyle. The differences in T2 values between the experimental group and the control group was compared, and the changes in T2 values of different regions of interest of the knee cartilage of the respective groups was analyzed. Results: (1) Regardless of gender, no significant difference was found in the T2 values of the cartilage regions of interest in the knee joint surfaces between the experimental group and the control group ( P >0.05). (2) There was no statistically significant difference in the T2 values of the knee joints of the male control group, the female control group, and the female experimental group in each of the regions of interest of the knee joint ( P >0.05). (3) There were statistically significant differences in T2 values between the lateral femoral condyle, medial tibial condyle, and patellar cartilage in the male experimental group ( P <0.05). Conclusion: The T2-mapping technique can be used to quantitatively assess the effects of traditional wushu set training on the knee cartilage of college students by non-invasive means. The knee joints of male college wushu athletes showed heterogeneous changes after long-term traditional wushu routine training, so attention should be paid to adjusting the program to achieve targeted protection during training.
