The Book as Material:The Historical Progression of Book Studies and the Materiality

从媒介物质性研究出发,着眼书籍研究,回溯和归纳不同学派关于书籍的经典观点,书籍研究中对物质性的关注大体呈现了从凸显文本物质形式,到观照文本物质形态及其意义,再到对书籍物质性的关注等阶段。在此基础上,提出当前书籍研究向物质性转向的可能路径:首先,关注书籍的物理属性及其出版实践再造的物质性;其次,将书籍置于“关系”之中,考察作为“中介”的书籍;再次,采用结构主义视角,探讨书籍出版或物质技术与社会文明进步的关系。

This paper starts from the study of the materiality of media,focuses on the study of books,retraces and summarizes the classical views of different schools of thought on books,the attention to materiality in the study of books has generally shown the stages from highlighting the material form of the text,to looking at the material form of the text and its significance,and then to paying attention to the materiality of the book.On this basis,it proposes possible paths for the current study of books to turn toward materiality:first,focusing on the physical properties of books and the materiality of their re-creation in publishing practices;second,placing books in“relations”and examine books as“mediators”;third,to adopt a structuralist perspective and explore the relationship between book publishing or material technology and the progress of social civilization.
