Carol Ann Duffy,the modern female British Poet Laureate,has created a series of impressive images of"madwomen"in her poems,echoing the common themes of"enclosure"and"escape"in the works of female writers of the 19th century.Body image becomes the clue that runs through Duffy's depiction of madwomen in her early,middle and late poems.From the silent body,to the defiant body,and to the body of enjoyment and creation,the shift of the body images mirrors the growing process of the"madwomen"in Duffy's poems from enclosure to escape and then to transcendence,which not only reflects the poet's response to the subjective anxiety of female writers in the 19th century,but also displays the evolution of the poet's feminist thoughts.
