Zhang Zhidong’s Thoughts on State Translation and Its Generative Logic

张之洞对翻译的强国作用具有深刻认识,其赞助的国家翻译活动时间跨度之长、内容范围之广、社会文化影响之深远,足以使其彪炳中国翻译史册。本研究基于国家翻译实践相关理论,梳理张之洞的涉译言论和翻译赞助活动,探究其国家翻译观及生成逻辑,认为其赞助国家翻译本质上是一种救亡图存使命驱动下的政治文化实践,具有丰富的政治史、社会史、文化史意蕴;其赞助翻译过程中坚持“中体西用”原则,为晚清国家自强图存和文化发展提供了一个切实有效的解决方案。张之洞的翻译赞助行为和国家翻译观为新时代中国探索“文明互鉴”之道提供了有益借鉴。

Zhang Zhidong had a deep understanding on the function of translation to strengthen the country.The duration,scope and influence of his patronage in state translation gave him a special place in China’s translation history.This paper,from state translation perspective,explores Zhang Zhidong’s thoughts on state translation and its generative logic.It holds that Zhang’s patronage in state translation is essentially a political-cultural undertaking driven by his mission to secure the survival of China,thus of rich political,social and cultural connotations;and his“zhongti xiyong”principle,namely,“keeping Chinese learning as substance and adopting Western knowledge for application”,offers an effective solution for China’s national development and cultural transformation in late Qing period.His patronage in and thoughts on state translation is still of great significance for us to learn in order to promote“mutual learning among civilizations”in the new era.
