The word“■”in oracle bone inscriptions has recently been interpreted by many scholars as fan樊based on Chu bamboo manuscripts.By examining the early form of the word樊,we can know that“■”and“樊”are not related.Based on the Warring States seal word“■”with wang网signific, and the Oracle Bone word“■”formed as“■”,we can know that“■”is composed of gong■and wang网,with the latter also functioning as phonophore. The character was made to write the word“netting.”The variant forms“■”and“■”are used as place names in oracles, and can be read as Meng盟,namely Meng Jin盟津commonly seen in ancient books.
