Montane lakes, far away from direct anthropogenic disturbances, are sensitive to global changes, and their environ‐mental evolution is a hot topic in limnology.Diatom,as a biological indicator, has received widespread attention from the academic community for its excellent ability to indicate changes in the lake ecology. This paper reviewed the history of montane lake ecology based on diatoms in the Northern Hemisphere over the past 200 years. It was found that most of the mountain lake ecology had changed abruptly, driven by general climate warming and atmospheric nitrogen deposition, and there were regional differences in shift time. However, the evolution of lake ecology and its driving mechanism in the Tibetan Plateau("the Third Pole of the earth")are still debated. Therefore,it is suggested that the study of lake ecology evolution in the Tibetan Plateau should be strengthened. This will provide a scientific baseline for assessing and predicting global changes.
