多元系统论视角下的华蘅芳科技翻译研究

Analysis of Hua Hengfang's Science and Technology Translation from the Perspective of Polysystem Theory:

华蘅芳是清末杰出的科技翻译家,他在矿物学、地质学、气象学、军事学、数理学方面的科技翻译活动为中国早期现代化做出了重要贡献。本文从多元系统论视角考察华蘅芳的科技翻译,得出以下结论:(1)华蘅芳的科技翻译在清末社会文化多元系统中实现了从“边缘”走进“中心”;(2)处于“幼嫩”状态的矿物学和地质学、处于“边缘”状态的气象学以及处于“危机”状态的军事学和数理学这三大客观条件使得华蘅芳的科技翻译能够占据中心;(3)清末社会主流意识形态以及为华蘅芳科技翻译活动提供直接或间接赞助的清政府、洋务派、江南制造局及其下属机构翻译馆是影响其科技翻译走进“中心”的重要因素。

Hua Hengfang was an outstanding science and technology translator in the late Qing dynasty.His translation in the fields of mineralogy,geology,meteorology,military science,and mathematics made important contributions to China's early modernization.From the perspective of polysystem theory,this research examines Hua Hengfang's science and technology translation and draws the following conclusions:(1)Hua Hengfang's science and technology translation moved from a peripheral to a central position within the socio-cultural system of the late Qing dynasty;(2)Hua Hengfang's science and technology translation could occupy a central position because of the"young"mineralogy and geology,the"peripheral"meteorology,and the"precarious"military science and mathematics;(3)Hua Hengfang's science and technology translation was motivated by the dominant ideology during the late Qing dynasty and the direct or indirect patronage from Qing's sovereign,supporters of the Self-Strengthenign,Movement,Jiangnan Arsenal and its subordinate Translation Department.
