Between the Nature and the Man:The Significance of Civilization in Chinese Education

古典中国所开启的个体成人之哲学基础正是人天合一。从人天合一出发,中国人的基本生命精神乃是自强不息与厚德载物;个体成人的展开则是让自我感通于天地万物,让天地万物融入自我之中,在人与世界合一的过程之中逐步开启一条自我生命发展的恒常之道。人天合一不仅给出个体成人的基础形式,同时也给出个体成人的根本动力与最终目的。“兴于《诗》,立于礼,成于乐”乃是天人视域之中个体趋向人天合一的教育路径。今日中国之个体成人的基本目标乃是“基于传统的现代中国人”,引导年轻一代以日新之中国人的方式成为更好的人。成为更好的中国人,也成为更好的人,就是在以中国人的方式造就新的文明。

The philosophical basis of individual’s being human opened in classical China is the unity of the man and the nature.Based on it,the basic life spirit of the Chinese people is self-improvement and moral commitment;the development of the individual’s being human is to sense the world through his body,and let the world melt into himself,gradually opening a constant way of self-life development.The unity of the man and the nature not only gives the basic form of individual’s being human,but also gives the fundamental motivation and ultimate goal of individual’s being human.“Xing in poetry,standing in ceremony,and becoming in music”is the educational path that individuals tend to the unity of the man and the nature.The basic goal of the individual’s being human in today’s China is to be“modern Chinese based on tradition”and to guide the younger generation to become better people in the way of the new Chinese.To be a better Chinese,to be a better person,is to create a new civilization in the Chinese way.
