English neoclassical architecture, building upon its Baroque heritage, embraced the cross-Channel traditions of tourism and surveying. However,it took these practices a step further by incorporating activities such as the systematic measurement of ruins, the collection of antiquities, the formation of organizations, and the establishment of academies. This article focuses on the English architect John Soane, examining his experiences during the Grand Tour, his involvement in the Architects’Club, and his role as a professor of architecture at the Royal Academy(RA).Through this lens, the article seeks to uncover the dynamics of communication and development within English neoclassical architecture, exploring how a single architect’s personal, social, and pedagogical relationships influenced the field.
