Surrounded by what is arguably China's most modern metropolis,Fengjing Ancient Town,a well-preserved example of water towns south of the Yangtze River,is model of Shanghai's efforts to preserve and develop its cultural heritage. The town has 39 ancient stone bridges dating back to the Yuan,Ming and Qing dynasties(1279-1911),as well as an ancient architectural complex covering nearly 50,000 square meters. The balance of preservation and development allows residents there to maintain traditional lifestyles while enjoying modern amenities.
