Diana Abu-Jaber's The Language of Baklava discusses the distinct identity consciousness of contemporary Arab Americans through depicting the attitude of the protagonist Diana and her father Bud towards American and Arabic food and ways of eating. They accept American food and ways of eating, but back home they often cook and enjoy Arabic food. The act of inheriting and transplanting Arabic food into America reflects their recognition of their dual identities. In addition, they transform Arabic food and ways of eating through mixing Arabic,American, and Italian food cultures, which reflects their negotiation and transcendence of dual cultural identities and also manifests a certain cosmopolitan ideal. The duality and cosmopolitanism of their identities illustrate"transnationalism"as defined by Basch et al.,which is characterized by translocality, borderlessness, and mobility, reflecting Abu-Jaber's open and inclusive identity consciousness.
