摘要
A.S.拜厄特的《石头女人》以奥维德《变形记》中的皮格玛利翁故事为蓝本,从媒介和形象两个层面对其进行了双重活现,表现出对衰老、死亡和生命本质的深度思考。作家首先置换了皮格玛利翁借助刻刀雕琢“象牙姑娘”的过程,在运用极具质感的“石头”语词重构年老女性病体形象的同时呈示了一种良性的伦理关系和积极看待衰老与死亡的视角;其次,通过将人体的生理性病变活现为人性化的石头图景,小说在由衰至死的病体石化过程和地质学意义上蓬勃生长的地球生命之间实现了转喻对接,揭示出作为自然构素的生命衰死之后复归大自然而流转不息的面貌。
Based on Ovid's Pygmalion,Byatt's"A Stone Woman"makes a double prosopopoeia of the story through both media and images,probing into ageing,death,and the essence of life.Byatt first transforms Pygmalion's process of carving his ivory girl.She uses extremely textured words for stone to fashion an image of the old woman's sick body,demonstrating a positive attitude towards ageing and death.By presenting physiological lesions as a humanized"stonescape",Byatt also depicts the petrification process of the sick body from decay to death and relates it to the vigorous life on earth,revealing that life as a natural component returns to nature after decay and death in a dynamic geological sense.
