In the narrative process of retelling the Native American political events related to Termination in 1953-1954,Louise Erdrich tells the story of Vera,a young Native American woman,by means of a nested and collage-like narrative strategy, which allows her to observe the history and reality of relevant ethnic politics.Enticed by government propaganda,Vera relocates from reservation to city, which reflects the ambivalent attitude of Native Americans towards the discourse of assimilation policy. Her experience of being deceived and tormented is a metaphor for the predicament of Native Americans with so-called"freedom"and"equality".Her rebirth shows how the subaltern reviews and rebels against the ethnic political discourse of majorities.Through Vera's story,Erdrich deconstructs mainstream American ethnic political discourse and responds to the current dualistic political debates.
