Sophocles'last tragedy The Oedipus Coloneus, penned in 406 BC,has faced scholarly scrutiny regarding the perceived disunity between its action and structure. In response to these inquiries, this paper embarks on an exploration of the necessity of"the Episode of Polyneices"for the central theme of the play, aiming to defend its relevance.Introducing the question of the episode and dissecting its form, the paper contends that Polyneices symbolizes Oedipus'guilt, and through his rage against Polyneices,Oedipus seeks to atone for his culpability and ultimately become a god.It argues that"the Episode of Polyneices"is pivotal to the development of the central theme of the play and serves as the ultimate resolution to the conflict between guilt and divinity.
