论不可译性及其对策--基于《围城》英译的研究

On Untranslatability and Countermeasures Against It--Based on the English Translation of“Fortress Besieged”

不可译性是翻译界长期关注的一个理论问题,深入研究不可译性问题有助于推动中外文化的交流与融合。目前学界主要是从语言、文化和文体的角度出发,对翻译中的不可译现象或可译性限度进行研究,但鲜见从汉译英实践的具体个案着手来研究不可译性问题。文章在参照约翰·卡特福德的不可译性分类原则的基础上,以《围城》的英译为实例,探讨不可译性的内涵和分类,并提出套译、释义等具体对策,以期突破中国文学外译难点,助推中国文化走向世界。

Untranslatability has long been a theoretical concern in the translation field,and an in depth study of the issue can help promote the exchange and integration of Chinese and foreign cultures.Research on the phenomena of untranslatability or the limit of translatability in translation has primarily been conducted from the perspectives of language,culture,and style so far,but rarely from specific cases of Chinese to English translation practice.On the basis of John Catford’s classification of untranslatability,the English translation of Fortress Besieged is used as an example to discuss the connotation and classification of untranslatability,and to propose specific translation countermeasures such as idiomatic translation and paraphrasing,so as to break through the difficulties in translating Chinese literature and help Chinese culture go global.
