An Illustrated Biography of Confucius"Yan Ying's Attempt to Discredit Confucius"

孔子三十五岁时,鲁国发生内乱,鲁昭公流亡齐国。不久后,孔子也带领弟子来到齐国,并通过高昭子引荐,得到觐见齐景公的机会。齐景公见到孔子后,向孔子询问应如何治理国家。孔子回答道:“不要奢侈浪费,应力倡节约。”齐景公听后,觉得颇有道理,想把尼豁的田地封赐给孔子,但被晏婴劝阻。晏婴认为,孔子的学说并不适合齐国的政治现实。于是,齐景公再接见孔子时,对孔子说:“我老了,无法任用你了。”孔子不久后就离开了齐国。

When Confucius was thirty-five years old,his home state of Lu was in political turmoil,and his lord,Duke Zhao of Lu,went into exile in Qi.Before long,leading his disciples,Confucius also came to Qi.Through the introduction of Gao Zhaozi,a high minister at the Qi court,Confucius gained an audience with Duke Jing.The duke asked Confucius about governing properly,to which Confucius replied,"Be frugal in your expenditure."Thinking that Confucius'advice made perfect sense,the duke was minded to offer him a fief in Nixi.However,the duke's chief minister,Yan Ying,dissuaded the duke,saying that Confucius'teachings did not fit the political reality of Qi.Therefore,when Duke Jing received Confucius again,he claimed,"I am too old to employ you."Confucius left Qi soon after.
