Quilt Arts of South Africa Edited by MARSHA MACDOWELL Indiana University Press In the far south of the African continent, women have a long tradition of crafting bed coverings using textile techniques commonly used in quilting,a practice deeply embedded in the histories of the San and Khoi peoples.Between the late 1600s and the early 1800s,South Africa experienced an influx of Dutch,French,Indian, and British settlers, including military personnel, traders, miners, and missionaries. These groups introduced their own cultural traditions, including the art of quilt making.Today, quilting thrives as a vibrant art form in South Africa.
