Asina and Wang Deming are two historical plays written by Li Jianwu during the occupation of Shanghai, adapted from Shakespearean dramas.Together, they exhibit a distinctive self-reflective structure inherent in historical plays. This structure is not only evident in the aesthetic forms and thematic layers of the works but also resonates with the playwright's life experiences at that time.Li Jianwu's historical playwriting involves a free interchange between ancient and modern,Eastern and Western cultures, opening up the imagination of history and reality.Furthermore, these works represent a compromise between Li Jianwu's literary ideals and commercial interests in the drama, encapsulating the ethical awareness, aspirations, and subtle personal history of the playwright during the occupied period.
