It is generally believed in the academia that the earliest edition of the 20-volume Xuanhe Painting Manual that survived till today is the one printed by Wu Wengui during the Dade Era of the Yuan Dynasty, with one copy in the collection of the US Library of Congress and one in the collection of the Palace Museum in Taipei. However, this can be mistaken.Zhang Yunliang and Chang Bide saw only the copy in Taipei, while Wang zhongmin only saw the one in the Library of Congress.Wang and Chang respectively compared the copy they saw with the edition prefaced by Yang Shen which was printed during Emperor Jiajing's reign in the Ming Dynasty, and arrived at somewhat different conclusions.Fu Zengxiang had the opportunity to see both of the two and pointed out the differences in the ink stamps in these two copies, which was key to detemining when the two copies were printed and their relationship with the Jiajing edition.By elaborating on this point, this paper offers a new perspective for the study of different editions of Xuanhe Painting Manual and sheds light on further bibliographic studies of other ancient books.
